Leicestershire
Over the past 12 months, we have played a central role in supporting the growth of community energy across Leicestershire through the GreenerFuture Leicestershire project. Working in partnership with Leicestershire County Council and Green Fox Community Energy, we delivered a tailored capacity-building programme designed to turn local interest into practical action.
The programme engaged more than 50 interested residents, developing a strong core network of eight community energy groups and around 30 local champions active across all seven districts and Leicester City. Over 170 hours of training and one-to-one support were delivered, covering governance, incorporation, energy advice, renewable generation, communications and local energy planning. This hands-on support enabled seven groups to develop robust project plans and access Get Ready Community Energy funding, moving rapidly into delivery.
One of the project’s major successes has been the creation of a collaborative countywide forum, providing a regular space for groups and champions to share learning, coordinate activity and build confidence. Alongside this, CEP supported the development of a strong pipeline of potential renewable energy projects, including solar schools and wider generation opportunities, with the long-term ambition of progressing towards a countywide portfolio of community-owned schemes.
The impact has been recognised nationally, with Leicestershire County Council winning the Community Energy England Award for Supportive Local Authority in November 2025. Looking ahead, ongoing support through CEP’s Community Energy People programme will help retain skills, sustain employment, and ensure that community energy continues to grow as a vital part of Leicestershire’s net zero journey.

“Leicestershire County Council has been a standout supporter of community energy, working closely with Green Fox Community Energy and Community Energy Pathways to grow local capacity, set up new groups, and embed community energy across the county. Through funding, guidance and practical support, the partnership has helped groups flourish and deliver meaningful benefits for communities and the environment.”

“Before this programme, we had enthusiasm but no clear route forward. The support we received around governance, funding and project planning gave us the confidence to move from an idea to a funded project. Being part of the countywide forum has also made a huge difference – we’re no longer working in isolation.”
